Description

This handcrafted ghost net sculpture, Kookaburra, by Aboriginal artist Marlene Norman, measures 89cm tall and 97cm wide. Made from recycled fishing nets, it transforms marine debris into sustainable art. The design celebrates the iconic Australian bird while highlighting the environmental impact of ghost nets on marine ecosystems. Flat and suitable for hanging, this piece blends Indigenous craftsmanship with a call for ocean conservation.

Ghost nets, or fishing nets abandoned or lost at sea, pose a massive threat to marine life and birds. Fish and turtles, as well as larger animals such as dolphins and sharks, are often discovered entangled in the net, many of which have been killed.
