Hidden Artwork Story

After a truly challenging year in 2019 losing my eldest brother and only blood sibling, after my horrid car accident, I was left reeling. Come january in the new year my soul had eased enough to want to create again, I just wanted to paint. But I wanted to paint my hurt. Not the ugliness of it, not the pain of it, just something true, something that echoed my darkness.

The multiple borders indicate challenges and how sometimes you have to go through layer after layer before you get to any light. The wanjala (goanna) has always been one of my most favourite things to paint and draw, the intricate designs of it shows complication, but in all the complication there’s hope, it’s beautiful.

The literal representation is the Wanjala camp. When hunting the last thing you want is for the goanna to go in his camp, because you can be there for hours and there’s only 2 ways he is coming out, by digging through all the sand and dirt or by fire. That’s if you can get him at all.

But a hunter has to go through all that hard work to get to have a good feed at the end of the day.
