ARTIST:
Napolean Phillip Oui, a Djabugay man, is a cultural performer, presenter, and educator with over 19 years of experience. As an emerging artist, his work is deeply influenced by his connection to traditional Djabugay culture.
Artwork Details: Fish, Rainforest Shield Design (2008) is an acrylic painting on canvas, measuring 1150 x 900 mm.
Artwork Story: Inspired by his Djabugay heritage, Napolean’s work reflects the bold designs of traditional rainforest shields, unique to Far North Queensland. Fish, a vital part of traditional life, are central to this contemporary piece, which draws on the artistic style once used on large rainforest shields. The central “boss” element connects the painting to its cultural roots.
