Description

This striking sawshark bill, measuring 112cm in length, is mounted on a large, weathered 150cm timber board. (The term “sawfish” is sometimes used interchangeably with sawshark.) A bold, substantial piece, it serves as an impressive focal point for any space, whether in a corporate setting or as a standout feature in your home.

Created by Rod Lucas, a Takalaka man from the Gulf of Carpentaria, this piece is part of his Swimming North Collection. The artwork is a replica of the endangered sawshark, a marine species recognised by its elongated, tooth-lined snout. The sawshark uses this distinctive feature to hunt, but overfishing and habitat loss have caused their numbers to decline rapidly.

Crafted from casting plaster, fibreglass, and resin, and reinforced with steel for durability, this sawshark bill is hand-painted in water-based acrylics and sealed with lacquer. It is adorned with intricate details, including a compass and tiny fish that illustrate the Swimming North story. Endorsed by Sharks and Rays Australia, this artwork makes a powerful statement about marine conservation.

Rod Lucas hopes that through his work, he can raise awareness about the urgent plight of the sawshark. As he states, “This sawshark bill is a replica of the endangered species. Hopefully, I can shine a light on the truth and their plight and rapid decline all around the world.”

Bring home this unique piece of art and contribute to the important conversation on preserving endangered marine species.
