Sawshark Bill, with Original Acrylic Artwork “Swimming North” by Rod Lucas 150cm

This striking sawshark bill, measuring 112cm in length, is mounted on a large, weathered 150cm timber board. (The term “sawfish” is sometimes used interchangeably with sawshark.) Created by Rod Lucas, a Takalaka man from the Gulf of Carpentaria, this piece is part of his Swimming North Collection. The artwork is a replica of the endangered sawshark, a marine species recognised by its elongated, tooth-lined snout. The sawshark uses this distinctive feature to hunt, but overfishing and habitat loss have caused their numbers to decline rapidly.

Crafted from casting plaster, fibreglass, and resin, and reinforced with steel for durability, this sawshark bill is hand-painted in water-based acrylics and sealed with lacquer. It is adorned with intricate details, including a compass and tiny fish that illustrate the Swimming North story. Endorsed by Sharks and Rays Australia, this artwork makes a powerful statement about marine conservation.
