Description
This unique Head Carving (Face painting) from Tiwi Design titled ” Purrukapali and Bima” and is hand carved and hand-painted with meticulous care. Made on Bathurst Island, a place where art, ceremony, and daily life intertwine, this carving reflects the traditional techniques and materials—like ochre and ironwood—cherished by the Tiwi people. Ironwood is a heavy dense timber that is particularly difficult to carve but is traditionally used due to its resistance to termites.
Established in 1969, Tiwi Design is an art centre dedicated to promoting and preserving Tiwi art and culture. With each purchase, you support the ongoing celebration and transmission of Tiwi cultural heritage.
