Wadgina (8) – The Face of One Wadgina

This Aboriginal artwork by Rod Lucas, a Takalaka artist from the Gulf of Carpentaria, features the face of a single Wadgina, the thunderstorm spirit, painted on a freshwater turtle shell. The face is painted in rich red ochre, set against a vibrant yellow ochre background with a white rim. Wadgina is the spirit that fills waterholes for turtles to survive. During the wet season, when turtles are abundant, Wadgina also hunts them, playing an integral role in the cycles of the land and waters.

Each shell in this collection is ethically sourced, hand-painted, and finished with lacquer. A wire is attached for easy wall mounting, or it can be displayed on a tabletop. This artwork is a striking and meaningful piece that brings the story of Wadgina to life in any space.
