Artwork Story
This painting is my own vision of the Milky Way in the night sky.
When I was a young boy sleeping out on Country, I would always stare up into the night sky. In amongst the Milky Way, I would picture certain images of bush animals—whether they were truly there or just a figment of my imagination, I don’t know. But they kept me captivated, staring up into the stars on a clear night.
I would link certain stars in my mind, forming the head, body, feet, and legs of these animals. The ones that became most dominant in my imagination are the ones I have painted.
The ones that became so dominant in my mind were the bush turkey (top left), emu (top right), brim (middle), goanna (bottom left), and blue-tongue lizard (bottom right). The circles represent waterholes and springs. The background represents the colour of two soil types common to the area on Country.
