Description

This traditional broom is handcrafted by Wasada Gutchen from a single coconut palm leaf. The green leaf is stripped away, leaving only the “bones” of the palm. The main central bone is carefully sliced and woven to create the handle, while the smaller bones, still attached to the central one, are sliced to form the bristles.

The entire piece is crafted as one, then rolled into a circular shape and secured with a woven clasp. This intricate process, requiring hours of skilled work, reflects proper Torres Strait Islander methods. Durable and functional, it often lasts longer than a store-bought broom and can be displayed as a decorative piece or used for cleaning.
